1 Introduction

Henry T. Yang was named the fifth chancellor of University of California, Santa Barbara in 1994. He was formerly the Neil A. Armstrong Distinguished Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Purdue University, where he also served as the dean of engineering for ten years. Dr. Yang is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has received many awards and honors for his research, teaching, and service, including an honorary doctorate from Purdue University and the Benjamin Garver Lamme gold medal, the highest honor from the American Society of Engineering Education. He has served on committees such as the Defense Science Board and in various capacities on other scientific advisory boards for the U.S. Air Force, the Navy, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Yang specializes in aerospace structures, structural dynamics, composite materials, finite elements, transonic aeroelasticity, wind and earthquake structural engineering, and manufacturing. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 articles for scientific journals, as well as a widely used textbook on finite element structural analysis. He has completed the guidance of 46 Ph.D. and 18 M.S. theses. Dr. Yang teaches one or two undergraduate courses at UCSB each year and, with two research grants from the National Science Foundation and two research grants from NASA, currently supports and guides five Ph.D. students.

He and his wife, Dilling, live on campus. Dilling volunteers her time to the university and, like other spouses of UC chancellors, holds the UCOP-appointed title of Associate of the Chancellor. Henry and Dilling Yang were recently named honorary alumni of UCSB.
