The 6-10 office is an extra-constitutional arm of the National Security Bureau and Public Security Bureau of China. It was established on June 10, 1999, hence the name, to facilitate the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The security service has absolute power in handling all matters involving Falun Gong and other dissident groups. It is comparable to the Nazi Gestapo. Agents of the office often operate in plain clothes. It has been reported that it operates a large network of spies and informants across the globe, designed to gather information regarding dissident actions abroad. These spies include business men, diplomats and students who are sent abroad. They are given tasks like infiltrating Falun Gong groups, but also gathering business and military intelligence. It has been claimed that up to 1000 spies operate in Australia. The Chinese ambassador to Australia has denied such claims. There has also been attempts to recruit informants by arresting foreigners while they are visiting China and coercing them into spying back home.
