City on Fire (Simplified Chinese: ????????????, Pinyin: L??ng h?? f??ng y??n) is a gritty and stylish 1987 Hong Kong action cinema|Hong Kong action film directed by Ringo Lam, and starring Chow Yun-Fat, Danny Lee and Sun Yueh. Following A Better Tomorrow (1986) it helped establish Chow's popularity as an action star in Asia, and to a lesser degree the West, and Chow and Lee would later team up in John Woo's The Killer (film)|The Killer (1989) with even greater success. City on Fire is probably Ringo Lam's most celebrated work. It saw a surge in popularity following the 1992 release of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, which was heavily influenced by this movie, and has been frequently cited by Tarantino as one of his favorite films. Reservoir Dogs borrows several key plot elements and scenes, most notably the famous Mexican standoff near the end of the film, though the styles and storylines are quite different, and the standoff has quite a different outcome. Ringo Lam cast Chow Yun-Fat in a number of other successful crime action-thrillers, most notably Prison on Fire and Full Contact.
