Under the Convention of Chuenpeh, China would cede Hong Kong Island to United Kingdom|Britain in 1841. China would also pay an indemnity of $6 million and let the British have free access to the port of Guangzhou|Canton. This agreement was signed bewteen the Governor of Guangdong|Kwangtung Province, Qi-shan and Captain Charles Elliot of the Royal Navy. However, both sides were unhappy with this convention and it was not signed by them. Later in 1842, Hong Kong Island was formally ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Nanking.
