Youde is mainly remembered as the Governor during whose time in office the Joint Declaration on the future of Hong Kong was signed in Beijing in 1984. This, inter alia, made clear that the British would leave Hong Kong in 1997 after 156 years of colonial rule. Youde, Hong Kong's only Welsh Governor, was widely liked for his pleasant, kindly demeanour and greatly admired for his formidable erudition. He was particularly revered by the Chinese population of Hong Kong, many thousands of whom lined the streets for his "state" funeral in 1986. The Edward Youde Aviary in the Hong Kong Park was named after him. The Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, one of the many hospitals in Hong Kong, was named after his wife. start box succession box | before = Lord Murray MacLehose of Beoch| title = Governor of Hong Kong| years = 1982 - 1986 | after = Sir David Akers-Jones (Acting Governor) end box politician-stub Category:1924 births|Youde, Edward Category:1986 deaths|Youde, Edward Category:Governors of Hong Kong|Youde, Edward zh:尤德 This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.
