Image:Geely Beauty Leopard at IAA 2005.jpg|300px|thumb|The Geely Beauty Leopard at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung|IAA 2005 in Frankfurt Geely Automobile (吉利汽车) was the first independent automobile manufacturer in the People's Republic of China, beginning in 1998, having acquired a minivan maker's licence. Geely started in 1986 as a manufacturer of refrigerators and by 1992, motorcycle parts. In 1994, Geely began manufacturing motorcycles. By 1996, Geely had produced over 200,000 motorcycles and scooters. The parent company is Geely Holding Group (吉利控股集团). Geely scooters are approved for import into the United States, and are quite popular. The company aims to become the first Chinese automaker to export cars to the United States. In 2005 they inked a deal with Malcolm Bricklin to start selling its vehicles by 2006. The company sold 80,000 vehicles in 2003, and hopes to reach 1,000,000 by 2010. Geely's chairman and founder, Li Shufu, wants to sell two-thirds of the company's output overseas, though he is noncommittal on when that could happen. In a March 2005 forum held in Beijing, he was quoted as saying:
Geely is reportedly cooperating with Daewoo International, Maggiora and R??cker. Most of Geely's range is based on the Xiali TJ7300, which in turn was based on the 1987 Daihatsu Charade. Models such as the Haoqing (豪情) (five-door), Meirie (美日) (five-door), Uliou (优利欧) (four-door) and Urban Nanny (van and pick-up truck) have Charade bases, but feature a more prominent chromed grille. However, Geely's Beauty Leopard, launched in 2003, is a two-door coupé with no Daihatsu roots (and a built-in karaoke player). The design of the front reminds viewers of the Nostril|nostrils of a Chinese dragon. Modern-auto-stub China-stub
