  • Inner (lower) trigram is ☱ (||: 兌 dui4) Open = (澤) swamp

  • Outer (upper) trigram is ☶ (::| 艮 gen4) Bound = (山) mountain

  • The trigrams can be read bottom to top as "With self-reflection (lake in lower) comes discernment - quality control (mountain in upper)"

The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.

  • The skeletal form of hexagram 41 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 07 where we have a generic focus on establishing uniformity (the 'army' etc). There is an alchemical link here in that the 'decrease' etc reflects concentration, distillation of 'something' to a pure form - this of course can fail and we get 'true' decrease - a pile of 'waste'.
