  • Inner (lower) trigram is ☶ (::| 艮 g??n) Bound = (山) mountain

  • Outer (upper) trigram is ☶ (::| 艮 g??n) Bound = (山) mountain

  • The trigrams can be read bottom to top as "With self-restraint (mountain in lower) comes discernment (mountain in upper)"

The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.

  • The skeletal form of hexagram 52 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 36 where we have a generic focus on covering up the 'light', keeping it hidden, internal. This is expressed in 52 with its focus on 'within' - mountain as base covers being stopped, blocked that is refined when we use that suffering to develop quality control - discernment (mountain in top). There is a strong link of Mountain to Buddhist principles re learning from suffering, self-restraint etc... all focused on the light 'within', a theme shared with 36.
