  • Inner (lower) trigram is ☲ (|:| 離 li2) Radiance = (火) fire

  • Outer (upper) trigram is ☳ (|:: 震 zhen4) Shake = (雷) thunder

  • The trigrams can be read bottom to top as "With guidance (fire in lower) comes awareness (thunder in upper)"

The Self-Referencing I Ching : using the I Ching to describe itself

The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.

  • The skeletal form of hexagram 55 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 56 where we have a generic focus on issues of loyalty at a distance, foreign surroundings etc. Here in 55 the main issue is on abundance such that one's loyalties can be pulled hither and thither; as there is a wealth of choices etc so there is a wealth of 'dark' choices as well - abundance of wealth attracts an abundance of thieves.




The solar eclipse described in this hexagram's traditional text occurred on June 20 1070 BC.
