Jiujiebian, also known as nine section whip or chain whip, comes in a variety of different lengths. It is a traditional weapon in Wushu. The most common length for the whip consists of nine sections; however, the whip is also seen practiced in twelve sections as well as seven sections. Other practitioners of nine section whip choose to shorten their whip for increased control over the whip.
The chain whip consists of a handle and nine metal sections connected by metal links. The last section is a hard metal dart used for slashing or piercing an opponent. In modern wushu, the dart at the end is covered with a flag. The flag helps in balancing the whip, as well as promote a safe practice of the whip. Although the dart end of the whip is covered with a flag, each chain section still makes the whip a dangerous weapon, as the whip is usually flung at high speeds with much strength. The whip chain can be folded and hidden from view, making it an easy weapon to carry. It is also powerful: a light hit can cause a serious wound.
Typical movements for the nine section whip consists of twirling, flicking, and catching. In wushu forms, the chain whip is occasionally seen coupled with the broadsword, or another chain whip, thus procuring a double chain whip form, or a broadsword chain whip form. In higher levels of Wushu difficulty, the chain whip can be seen thrown in the air and caught, flicked around the neck, coupled with jump kicks and acrobatic movements, or flung around underneath the performer while the performer is on the floor.
