Administratively, the land area Kowloon Bay refers to is part of Kwun Tong districts of Hong Kong|district, and the sea area, together with the old Kai Tak International Airport|airport site, is part of Kowloon City district. The bay has undergone massive reclamation over the past century. Even San Po Kong, which is now far from the coast, was land reclamation|reclaimed from the bay in the early days. The bay now shut from the sea by a dam, and turned into a typhoon shelter. A small barrel rock, the Kowloon Rock, is in the typhoon shelter. Other barrel rocks, the Channel Rock and the Hoi Sham Island (also To Kwa Wan Island), are now connected to land at the former Kai Tak International Airport runway and at To Kwa Wan respectively, by land reclamation. The former Kai Tak International Airport had been built on reclaimed land in the bay, and its runway was surrounded by water on 3 sides. The Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Center|Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre is located in Kowloon Bay. Also, Amoy Gardens, where the most serious outbreak of SARS happened, is located at the east of MTR metro station|station. There are plans to convert the bay (reclaiming part or even the entire bay) and the former airport site into an in-city new town which would house 240 to 340 thousand residents, a sport stadium, and a pier for cruises. The reduction in demand for land and environmental issue led to a revision of the project. A MTR metro station|station in the northern part of Ngau Tau Kok is named Kowloon Bay, (the Ngau Tau Kok MTR station is located in the southern part of Ngau Tau Kok). Now people use Kowloon Bay to refer to the area nearby, although part of the Ngau Tau Kok Estate is right opposite to the Kowloon Bay MTR station. Both MTR stations are on the Kwun Tong Line.
