The Li family style of T'ai Chi Ch'uan (李氏) is a variation of T'ai Chi that is practised in the UK and continental Europe. The style is taught as part of a complete system (see Li Family Arts) including K'ai Men (lit. 'Open Door), a form of Taoist Yoga, Tao Yin (a form of qigong|ch'i kung), alongside the standard empty-hand and weapon forms. The Chang Ming diet is also advised by advocates of the system, but is rarely taught in classes.
Practitioners of this style claim that a range of Taoist health, cultural and Wu Shu arts collectively known by them as the Eight Strands of the Brocade have been preserved within the Li family of Wei Hei Wei, Northeastern China, for 3000 years. Their version of the Eight Brocades exercises is said by them to have remained exclusive to the Li family until the 1930s when it was first taught to outsiders in England by Professor Li Chan Kam.
The T.A.O. (Taoist Arts Organisation) was formed in February, 1995 in an attempt to create an environment in which the highest standards of teaching of the Li Family system could be maintained and passed on to students. The T.A.O. is a member of the BCCMA.
