While most of local Hong Kong movies were filmed locally, several foreign movies were also, at least partly, set in Hong Kong. The following is a list of movies set in Hong Kong.




  • Chinese Box (1997) ? set and made at the time of Hong Kong's handover to the People's Republic of China. The movie shows the actual temporary press room, specially set up for the press coverage of the handover, and located in the old part of the Exhibition Centre.

  • Die Another Day (2002) ? James Bond emerges from the waters of Victoria Harbor, after escaping custody

  • Shanghai Surprise (1986) - starring Sean Penn and Madonna (entertainer)|Madonna

  • The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) ? which includes scenes of James Bond visiting the "Bottom's Up", an actual bar in Tsim Sha Tsui

  • The Pillow Book (movie)|The Pillow Book (1996) ? by Peter Greenaway

  • The Vengeance of Fu Manchu (1967)

  • The World of Suzie Wong (1960) ? which includes footages of the Star Ferry

  • Three Businessmen (1998) - starring Miguel Sandoval and Robert Wisdom

  • Spy Game (2001) ? where the local HSBC Hong Kong headquarters building|HSBC headquarters are presented as the "US embassy". In fact, Hong Kong being a dependent area, there is no embassy in Hong Kong, but Consulates General

  • Year of the Dragon(movie)|Year of the Dragon (1985)

  • You Only Live Twice (1967)

  • A Better Tomorrow (1986)

  • As Tears Go By (1988)

  • Bishonen (movie)|Bishonen (1998)

  • Crime Story (1993) - includes real scenes of building explosions filmed in the deserted Kowloon Walled City, which was destroyed in the same year.

  • Chungking Express (1994) ? which includes footages of the Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui

  • Days of Being Wild (1991)

  • Fallen Angels (movie)|Fallen Angels (1995)

  • In the Mood for Love (2000) ? while set in Hong Kong, the actual filming location of outdoor scenes was Bangkok, Thailand. The movie also incorporates footages of Angkor Wat, Cambodia.
