National Cheng Kung University (Chinese language|Chinese: 國立成功大學, Tongyong Pinyin: Gu?L? Ch?ngGong D?Syu?, Hanyu Pinyin: Gu?l? Ch?nggōng D?xu?, Wade-Giles: Kuo2-li4 Ch'eng2-kung1 Ta4-hs?eh2), abbreviated as Cheng Da (成大), is located in Tainan City, Republic of China|Taiwan. Cheng Kung of National Cheng Kung University is adopted from Cheng Cheng-kung (Konxinga) who expelled the Dutch from Taiwan and settled down in Taiwan for continuing resistance against the Qing in Mainland China. Cheng Kung University was established in January 1931 as Tainan Technical College (in Chinese: 臺南高等工業學校; in Japanese language|Japanese officially from 1942 to 1945: 臺南工業專門學校). Its names after the History of Taiwan#Japanese Rule|Japanese Occupation was Taiwan Provincial Tainan Junior College of Technology (台灣省立台南工業專科學校), then Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering School (台灣省立工學院). As the number of colleges expanded, it was upgraded to a Taiwan Province|provincial university in 1956, then national in 1971. The school has 6 colleges and has been led by President Dr. Chiang Kao (高強) since 2001.
