In a historical context, the term is most often used to refer to the period of rule by the Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty or the period of rule by the late Qing Dynasty. These periods were characterised by the dominance of the Chinese civilisation in East Asia due to its political, economic, military or cultural power. In international relations theory since the 1990s, noting the increasing power (international)|power of the People's Republic of China, some scholars have posited a Pax Sinica in the twenty-first century. Other scholars believe that the opposite will happen and that the rise of Chinese power will encourage conflict rather than peace.
