It is set in the 1980s in and around the small city of Fenyang (zh-cp|c=汾阳市|p=F??ny??ng Sh??), Shanxi, China. It follows a group of twenty-something performers as they face personal and societal changes. Dialogue is a mixture of local speech and Standard Mandarin. It is slow-paced and somewhat grim.
