A Chinese musical instrument, the ruan is a moon-shaped short-necked fretted lute with four strings. Once termed as qin pipa (after the Qin dynasty) or yueqin ("moon-shaped lute"), it has a history of more than 2000 years.

The ruan is now most commonly used in Chinese operas and orchestral playing.
