Sangley (Sangleye, Sangley Mestizo, Mestiso ng Sangley, Mestizo de Sangley or Chinese-mestiso; plural: "Sangleys/es") , is a term used to describe a Filipino-born Chinese mixed with native Malay people|Malay ancestry, Spanish ancestry, or both. It was widely used in the 15th to 19th century Philippines to differentiate them from other types of Mestizos (such as those of mixed native Malay and Spanish ancestry).
Today, "Chinito" (lit. "little chinese man") is liberally used to describe a Sangley, but it also usually includes Filipinos of other North Asian ancestries (Japanese, Korean, Singaporean, etc.) that possess these prominent physical features. "Tsinoy", on the other hand, is used to refer to Filipinos of pure ethnic Chinese background. Among Mestizo#The Philippines|Sangley-mestisos, many simply use and prefer the generic term "mestiso" to describe themselves.
