Shanghai Jiaotong University is directly subordinate to the Ministry of Education in the People's Republic of China and is one of the key universities in China, jointly run by the Ministry and Shanghai Government. It is one of the most old-line national universities in China|Chinese history. In 1896, Nanyang Public School was founded by Sir Sheng Xuanhuai in Xujiahui, Shanghai, which belonged to the Business and Telegraphs Office of the Chinese government. There were four schools: a normal school, a school of foreign languages, a middle school and a high school; Sir Sheng Xuanhuai is the president. In 1904, the Ministry of Commerce took over the university, and changed its name to Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry the next year. In 1906, the university was taken over by the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs, and changed its name to Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. When the Republic of China was founded, the university was run by the Ministry of Communications, and changed its name once again to Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry. In 1918, the school of management was founded in this university, and it became one of the oldest universities founded by the Chinese government. In 1920, the university was combined with some other colleges and change its name to Nan Yang College of Chiao Tung. In 1928, the name was changed to First Chiao Tung University of the Communications Ministry. In the 1930s, it was said to be the Eastern Massachusetts Institute of Technology|MIT. In 1938, the Ministry of Education took over the university, and it was renamed National Chiao Tung University. In 1943, the graduate school was founded. After the civil war of China in 1949 some parts of the university were transferred to other places and the main part changed its name to Shanghai Jiaotong University. Shanghai Jiaotong University, through its century-long history, has nurtured large numbers of outstanding national figures and made significant contributions to the success and prosperity of the nation and the development of science and technology. Since its adoption of the reform and opening-up policy in China, Shanghai Jiaotong University has taken the lead in the management system reform in the institutions of higher learning, thus regaining its vigor and vitality as well as momentum for rapid growth as never seen before. A number of its disciplines have been advancing towards the world's first-class level, such as communications and electronic systems, naval architecture and ocean engineering, automatic control, composite materials, and metal plasticity processing. A batch of burgeoning branches of learning have occupied an important position in the country, such as large-scale integrated circuitry, computer science, optical fiber technology and systems engineering. There are also two directly affiliated departments: the Department of Plastic Technology and the Department of Physical Education, plus a Graduate School. Besides, it also has a School of Continuing (adult) Education, a School of Online Learning, a School of International Education, and a Vocational School. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 152 masters degree programs, 93 Ph.D programs, 16 post-doctorate programs, 16 state key doctorate programs and 14 state key laboratories and national engineering centers. Shanghai Jiaotong University boasts a good number of famous scientists and professors, including 22 academics of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 23 "Changjiang Chair Professors" and more than 1, 420 professors and associate professors. Its total enrollment of full-time students amounts to 23,900. There are 15,550 undergraduates and 12,780 candidates for the Master's Degree and Doctor's Degree. The centennial Jiaotong University has inherited its old tradition of "high starting points, solid foundation, strict requirements and extensive practice" which has produced one group of qualified students after another. Today the old tradition is endowed with new content and has become the fine style of learning of Jiaotong students. With such tradition Shanghai Jiaotong University is training students into excellent qualified talents with a solid and broad theoretical foundation, complex knowledge structure, international communicative ability and comprehensive development in morality, intelligence and physical fitness. Students from Jiaotong University have achieved top prizes in various competitions, such as the International Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Electronics Design Contest. Teachers from SJTU have won a number of top prizes in the national award of outstanding achievements in education for their teaching and research and the textbooks they have compiled. (Shanghai) Jiaotong University has beautiful campuses, occupying an area of more than 2 km² in total, and possesses plenty of advanced teaching and research equipment and facilities. Now, it has five campuses, the Xuhui, the Minhang, the Qibao, the Shangzhong Road and the Fahuazheng Road. Over the past decade, the number of students in Jiaotong University has grown from 5,000 to more than 23,000, the floorage of its various buildings from 230,000 to 800,000 m² and the area of campuses from 0.4 to 2 km². Apart from the major buildings such as the Lecture Buildings, Laboratory Buildings, Dormitories and Gymnasiums, SJTU also has the Bao Zhaolong Library which is well-known throughout the country. Various laboratories, including university central laboratories such as "Computer Center" and "Audio-visual Education Center" are equipped with advanced research and teaching equipment and facilities. Jiaotong University has been actively involved in international academic exchange programs with foreign universities. To date, it has established relations with more than 100 renowned universities and colleges in the world as well as connections with many research institutions, corporations and enterprises at home and abroad. Jiaotong university has invited more than 100 famous scientists and specialists as honorary professors or consulting professors, including the Nobel prize winners and physicists Yang Zhenning, Li Zhengdao and Ding Zaozhong. SJTU sends excellent teachers and students abroad every year to give lectures, to study or to attend international academic conferences; meanwhile SJTU invites foreign specialists and scholars to give lectures or to have academic exchanges. Jiaotong university is the hub of "China Education Science and Research Networks" in eastern China, and through computer networks, Jiaotong University has a faster and closer connection with universities, scientific research institutions and corporations both at home and abroad.
