Currently the line runs from Zhongshan Park in the west to Zhangjiang in the east, passing the Huangpu river and the Lujiazui financial district in Pudong. Currently work is being done on a western extension from Zhongshang Park to Hongqiao airport. Additional plans indicate the east of the metro will be extended to the Pudong International Airport, however no details on this plan are know yet. If both plans are completed the total length of the metro line would be over 50km, while is considerably longer than the current 19.2km.
