The Shenzhen Metro (SZM, Chinese: 深圳地鐵) is the underground railway in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. It is owned by the Shenzhen Metro Company (SZMC). The trial period for trains started when stations were opened at 5:00pm on Tuesday, December 28, 2004. Currently, there are trains only at 15 minute intervals. After the opening of the Shenzhen Metro, Shenzhen has become the 5th city with underground railway system in mainland China (after Beijing Metro|Beijing, Tianjin Metro|Tianjin, Shanghai Metro|Shanghai and Guangzhou Metro|Guangzhou). It has become a very cheap alternative way to travel in the city (compared with other transport modes such as buses and taxis), with prices currently ranging from only 2 to 5 Renminbi per person for each trip. Both the Shenzhen Metro in Shenzhen and the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation|Kowloon-Canton Railway (East Rail (KCRC)|East Rail) in Hong Kong make connections to Luo Hu (written as Lo Wu in Hong Kong, based on Cantonese (linguistics)|Cantonese), the border-crossing area between the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. A station situated at another Shenzhen-Hong Kong border-crossing area, called Huang Gang, will be open in the near future. Besides that, the Shenzhen Metro also connects to the Window of the World (世界之窗), a popular tourist spot in Shenzhen. Shenzhen Metro is now researching the feasibility of using Hong Kong Octopus Card on the system. There are reports indicating the usage might be possible in about a year. The second phase of line number 4 will be built by MTR Corporation Limited. The whole line will be operated by MTR on a Build-Operate-Transfer|BOT basis. MTR, in which Hong Kong's government owns a controlling stake, has also signed memorandums of understanding to invest in Line 2 and Line 3, which will cost more than 10 billion yuan. The first stage of construction of the Shenzhen Metro comprised of line number 1 and line number 4 with a total distance of 21.866 km. Currently, there are 19 active metro station|stations in total (one of them being an interchange station between both lines).
