South African Chinese are a group of overseas Chinese that were born and/or are currently living in South Africa. The earliest Chinese arrived in 1904 in South Africa to work in the gold mines of Transvaal. As with most non-white South Africans, the ethnic Chinese suffered from discrimination before the end of aparthied. Johannesburg's Chinatown has several multigenerational South African Chinese families. Unfortunately,Chinatown is in utter decline due to Johannesburg's crime rate. Chinese merchants are often robbed. Today, many immigrants to South Africa have migrated from Taiwan, Mainland China, and Singapore. There are also many illegal immigrants coming from Mainland China. There is a significant amount of Taiwanese investment in the economy of South Africa. Unfortunatly some of South Africa's Chinese communities have been troubled by the rising influence of the Triads.
