She was borrn in Wuhan, China. Aged only 16, she joined local band Hopscotch as singer and lyricist. The band signed to major label Modern Sky in 2002 and released their first English-language album that year, titled A Wishful Way. The album was well received by critics and the public alike thanks to its fresh sound, influenced by trip-hop and independent rock, and the beauty and talent of the band's frontperson. The same year she released her English-language novel Zebra Woods, which received some international acclaim, and wrote a collection of short story|short stories while touring for A Wishful Way, which was later published in China. In 2004 she starred alongside Josie Ho in Hong Kong Cinema of Hong Kong|film Butterfly, a performance for which she won an award as Best New Performer at Taiwan's Golden Horse Festival.
