1 Introduction
Ting Yuen

The Ting Yuen was the Chinese flagship at the Battle of the Yalu River (1894)|Battle of the Yalu River, which took place on September 17, 1894, between the Japanese and China|Chinese. The ship was the flagship of Admiral Ting Ju ch'ang, who unfortunately became a casualty of the battle when the Ting Yuen fired its opening shot.

Ting Yuen was built by AG Vulcan, in Stettin, Germany (now Szczecin, Poland). The hull was laid down on 31 March 1881 with the vessel launched on 28 December 1881 and sea trials commencing 2 May 1883.

The Ting Yuen was 7670 tons loaded and had a speed of 14.5 knot_(nautical)|knots. At 10 knots (19 km/h), Ting Yuen had a range of around 4,500 nautical miles. Armament consisted of four 12-inch Krupp 25 calibre breechloading guns in two barbettes with a secondary armament of two 5.9-inch, 35-calibre Krupp breechloaders, six 37mm guns and three torpedo tubes above the waterline. The crew was around 363 officers and men.

She was a sister ship to Chen Yuen.
