---- Tong has become part of the English language in the US. It is the Cantonese language|Cantonese transliteration of the Chinese character 堂, which is "Tang" (táng) in Mandarin. It usually means a clandestine China|Chinese secret society (see Tong war). However it could also mean a place where extended family meet, 廟堂. Tong (堂) is also a rare Chinese surname. However, Tong is often used as transliteration of other more common Chinese surnames, such as 董, 唐, 湯 etc. msg:stub Category:Secret societies This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.
