Yan Zhenqing (顏真卿, 709 - 785) was a leading China|Chinese calligrapher of the Tang dynasty.
The greatest Chinese calligrapher after Wang Xizhi, Yan's style unlike his predecessor is robust, muscular and grand. This dignified style exemplified the calligraphy of the Middle and Late Tang.
Born in Shandong province, Yan served as a government minister, and played an integral role in subjugating the An Lushan rebellion. Remaining loyal to Emperor Dezong of Tang|Emperor Dezong to the end, he was sent as emissary to the rebel Li Xilie, but was assassinated there instead.
