East China University of Science and Technology (Chinese: ????????????; pinyin: Hua Dong Li Gong Da Xue) is one of the state key university of higher education in the People's Republic of China, and one which is regard as the cradle of chemical engineers.
East China University of Science and Technology , originally named East China Institute of Chemical Technology, was founded in 1952. It was the first single-subject institute in China consolidated by the chemical departments of National Chiaotung University(http://www.nctu.edu.tw), Universit? d'Aurora, Utopia University, Soochow University(http://www.scu.edu.tw) and Yangtze University in China Eastern area at that time. It was defined as the national key university by the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party in 1960 and renamed as East China University of Science and Technology in 1993. With the effort of half a century, East China University of Science and Technology has developed itself into a national key university with technology as the major subject, distinct characteristics of each subject and a coordinated development of subjects including technology, science, economics, administration, humanities and law. It has set up a new running system managed jointly by the Ministry of Education, the City of Shanghai and the China Petrochemical Group. It has become one of the key universities in the national "211 project".
Now, East China University of Science and Technology consists of Graduate School, College of Continuing Education, Institute of Distance Education and 16 special institutes including School of Chemical Engineering, School of Petrochemical, School of Bioengineering, School of Chemistry and Pharmaceutics, School of Material Science and Engineering,School of Information Science and Engineering , School of Mechanical and Power Engineering,School of Resources and Environment Engineering,School of Science,Business School, School of Sociology and Public Administration,School of Foreign Languages , School of Urban Administration,School of Development,School of Philosophy and Politics, and School of Culture and Art. There are 35 departments and 52 undergraduate specialities in the university. It has doctor degree authorization for 29 subjects, master degree authorization for 71 subjects, engineering master degree authorization in 15 engineering fields, and MBA authorization.
Currently there are more than 15200 full-time students of various categories, among which more than 2000 are post graduates and more than 13000 graduates. There are about 4200 teaching and administrative staff, among which 1266 are professional teachers and more than 1000 staff with principal/deputy senior professional titles of various kinds. The university advocates the spirit of "diligence and honesty". It works hard with a united and pioneering spirit and has trained more than 60000 graduates for the country since its establishment.
The campus life in the university is also excellent. There are over 80 student associations for different fields in the university. For example, as one of the best French language student association in China, the French Association (Association Fran?aise, http://ecust.sinofrance.org) organized many intersting activities which cooperate with the French Consulate to celebrate the French Year in China(L'ann?e de la France en CHINE).
Today, East China University of Science and Technology is striding forward in high spirits to the objective of developing itself into a new-style university, which will be the first class nationally and of great influence internationally.
