Born Ming-Na Wen (溫明娜) on Coloane, Macau (then under Portugal|Portuguese administration), she moved to the United States as a girl. Playing Lien Hughes on As the World Turns, she was the first Asian-American to be a regular on a daytime soap opera. Her most promient role may be as Dr. Deb Chen on ER (television)|E.R.. She appeared in the movie version of Amy Tan's book The Joy Luck Club, and provided the voice for both the title character in Disney's animated movie Mulan and the character Aki Ross in the computer animated film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
