1 Introduction
Yan Liang

Wikipedia

Yan Liang (颜良) was a general serving under Yuan Shao during the Eastern Han Dynasty period of ancient China.

One of Yuan Shao's greatest military generals, Yan Liang was to be the first to face Cao Cao's army at the Battle of Guandu. Confident in being the best under Yuan Shao's banner, he strode forth declaring a challenge. Cao Cao sent forth his Guest General Guan Yu, who had gone into Cao Cao's service until he could locate his brother Liu Bei. Guan Yu accepted the challenge and Yan Liang's head rolled to the floor in the first bout.

Note: In the official histories, Guan Yu's defeat of Yan Liang isn't as great as the novel depicts it. It seems Yan Liang was unarmed and on foot when Guan Yu simply rode up to him and cut him down from behind.
